To draw a hand, first learn to look

Why careful observation matters more than a quick line.

To draw a hand, first learn to look

The human hand is familiar and difficult to draw. Fingers overlap, joints bend and tiny mistakes in proportion become immediately visible. That makes it an excellent subject for learning to observe.

See shapes, not labels

Instead of beginning with the thought “I am drawing a hand,” look for larger planes, angles and the silhouette. Where does one finger overlap another? How does the whole shape change when the hand turns?

Practice in small steps

Praxiszeichnen explores drawing through practical exercises. One subject viewed from several directions can reveal more than a hurried attempt at a finished picture. This is the appeal of bite-sized creative practice: each sketch teaches the eye something useful for the next one.
